The Arabian Dirham is the national currency of the UAE, the most stable in the world. What is the exchange rate in the country? What is the best currency to take with you and what is the best currency to pay with?
UAE currency exchange rate. Ratio to world currencies
The international abbreviation of the dirham is AED. Unofficial – DH or Dhs. The Dirham is equal to 100 Phils. The rate of UAE currency is pegged to the dollar, kept artificially. Accordingly, the exchange rate of the dirham changes to other currencies at the same time as the dollar.
The current exchange rate:
- 1 USD – 3.6719 AED;
- 1 EUR – 4,1221 AED;
- 1 GBP – 5,6531 AED.
UAE currency to the dollar: where is it profitable to exchange?
The national currency of the UAE is firmly “pegged” to the dollar and the pair’s price range has not changed much since 1971. Now the dollar is equal to 3.67 dirhams. The most advantageous exchange rate is applied to $100 bills, while the rate for the rest of the bills is noticeably lower.
However, if the bills are dilapidated, the exchange will be done without deviation from the standard rate. Change dollars into Arabian dirhams at Money Exchange offices (exchange offices) at a rate higher than in hotels, airports, banks.
Paying in local currency you can save a lot of money: when paying for goods and services in dollars sellers recalculate the cost of production in dirhams at an underestimated rate of 3.4 Dhs per USD.
What currency should I take in the UAE? How to save on exchange?
When planning a trip to the Emirates, people wonder what currency to take in the UAE? The best option is to take dollars and then exchange them for local bills. Exchanging, paying in USD is not a problem, thanks to the popularity.
When paying for goods with local money you can save on big discounts, which is not the case when paying in USD. Unused Arabian money can be easily exchanged back.
Where to change currency
We recommend changing money at a bank and special exchange offices, however, keep in mind that some exchange offices charge a commission. You can also change in hotels, but the exchange rate will be less profitable. By the way, most of all in exchangers they “love” a hundred-dollar bill – the most successful rate is set for it, for an amount less it is not so profitable.
Banks in the UAE are open every day except Friday (this is an official holiday in the country). Opening hours – approximately from 8 to 13 hours, without lunch. Separate currency exchange offices work most often seven days a week, from 8 am to 19 pm. There are many ATMs in the UAE, most often they are located in shopping centers, hotels and gas stations.
You can exchange money back at the airport – there are bank offices there. Moreover, you can change both before entering the departure zone, and in the departure zone itself. In this case, the course in the departure zone may be more profitable. Also here you can buy souvenirs or drinks for the remaining trifle.
Currency in the UAE: for tourists
There are no restrictions on the carriage of any money. However, if the amount is impressive, the authorities will require an explanation as to where the foreign or currency came from in the UAE. Tourists will have to say the reason for transporting them across the border.
Advice from seasoned tourists:
- When paying the bill in a restaurant with local banknotes the tip will be included in the amount of the bill – do not leave more, it is not accepted;
- Hotel porter or airport porter can be charged 5-10 dirhams depending on the amount of luggage;
- Do not tip cab drivers – it is not a tradition;
- If you ran out of Arab money they will accept pounds sterling, euros, dollars, but you will lose on the exchange rate, so make sure you have enough cash beforehand.
Don’t worry about incomprehensible numbers on the dirhams! On the back you will see the usual Arabic signs. Paradoxically, almost everyone in the world uses Arabic numerals and the Arabs use Indian numerals.
How much money to take with you
Calculate your budget depending on your needs – if you are going on excursions, be prepared that their average price is about $ 50 per person. Gathered for shopping – stock up on cash or a bank account. If you prefer to spend time in a hotel, occasionally being distracted by going to a coastal restaurant or a souvenir shop, take about 100-200 dollars with you.
Prices in the UAE are rounded up to 25 fils, so it is better to calculate in local currency. By the way, tips in the UAE are already included in the bill, you do not need to leave a separate reward to the waiter. There is also no tradition of tipping taxi drivers and maids.
Cashless payments
In many supermarkets, shopping centers and hotels you can pay with a bank card. When paying, they often ask in which currency to pay – in the currency of the card or in dirhams. If your card is dollar (currency) or ruble and you pay in dollars, then the rate will depend on the rate of the store. Usually it is placed next to the cash register on a separate plate. If your card is in dollars and you pay in dirhams, then the rate will be calculated at the rate of the payment system.
