The modern Al Maktoum International Airport opened in 2010, but it is still under construction. It is the second largest and most important air gateway in Dubai, now receiving about one million passengers a year, and by the end of the works it is planned to grow to 160 million people. The airport terminal is part of the Dubai World Central complex, which combines commercial and residential facilities.
Unique airport code:
- IATA: DWC
- ICAO: OMDW
Al Maktoum receives flights from Europe, Asia, South and North America, as well as from several cities in Russia. There are especially many planes during the high season, when the number of charters increases.
Al Maktoum is the second most important airport in the UAE after Dubai International Airport, which is 70 km away. The airport was named after the former Prime Minister of the UAE, Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
In 2017, Al Maktoum Airport served about one million passengers.
